Use More than One Color and Blend Them Well

An eye, blush or lip pattern will always look better when you use more than one color in that pattern and blend them well as you apply each one.

For example, to get your most natural eye makeup look, start your eye shadow pattern with a carefully blended natural brown contour color, the same color as your brows.

Next add one, two or more fashion colors over the contour color. This enriches the brown contour and tones it both to your coloring and the colors you’re wearing. Mixing colors this way mutes the fashion colors so they’re not too strong but instead are subtle and rich—the secret to creating deep, dewy eyes.

Use at least 2 colors for your blush, a slightly darker color to contour or define the hollow of your cheek and a second, lighter color to highlight your cheekbone. I often apply a darker cream blush, and then powder my face to set the cream and last apply a lighter powder blush to my cheekbone. Sometimes I switch this and apply a lighter cream blush, powder, then apply a slightly darker powder blush to contour my face.

I always use two to three colors for lips: lip liner to define the shape of your lips or contour away full lip areas, a main lip color—usually darker or brighter, and finally a touch of a lighter, brighter color in the center of your lips because it gives a bit of natural curve to your lips that makes them more inviting.

Knowing how to blend your makeup is a critical step in making your makeup look natural.  You want to blend the edges of your foundation and each makeup pattern in your eye shadow so it moves smoothly and evenly into the natural tone of your face. You can blend easily when you use the right eye shadow, foundation or blush brushes or sponges.

At home, on my own makeup, especially when I’m in a hurry, I often use my fingertips as the last, finishing step to blend my eye shadow—or the sides of my fingers to blend the edges of my blush pattern. Fingers have just a bit of sebum, your skin’s natural oil, on them. This makes it easy to blend and smooth the edges of your makeup patterns.

Makeup isn’t meant to cover or hide the skin but rather to enhance your natural beauty. Blending makes it possible to perfect your natural makeup look.

Don’t let that lead you away from makeup. While most men say they don’t like makeup, men love beautiful women. What men don’t like is obvious makeup.

Know How to Analyze Your Face

The Second Secret to achieve a natural makeup is to know your face structure. Before applying makeup, you first need to be able to assess your own features. Your best patterns for applying your makeup are determined by your structure, regardless of the newest trends.

Trends can be adapted to you, but never neglect your own facial structure to follow a trend. Trends change. Structure doesn’t.

For example, some trends focus on full lips (and women call for a plastic surgeon), or thick lashes (and we go through the contortions of gluing on extra lashes or apply chemicals to our eyelids).
